Reflection on Human Rights Article by Mr. Kelly

Human Rights should be for everyone. Yet sadly and at certain times  they are ignored.

Everyone needs to understand that human rights are important

Some people are obsessed with power and hurt others

Lots of people need to be educated about human rights

Everyone is equal is often talked about but not actually seen as important to many people.

It happens each day. Sometimes someone bullies another person and in so doing they take away their rights. That is a small action but it can cause lots of suffering.

What is interesting is that people can be so cruel on a regular basis. It is amazing how in situations a group of people will forget anything they have ever learnt about what is acceptable and behave in a way that denies someone any basic rights. Then we have examples of when large groups of people have denied people their rights.

Today such examples are  to be found anywhere. People of different ages and backrounds have all been involved in denying people their rights. Some people do not even realise that their prejudice against others can include members of their own family.

Parents have been found who will starve their child to death. The Social services not even visiting the child who is at risk. The blame being  placed on big organisations. Important journalists even writing that heaven forbid pshe become compulsory.  We live in a culture where when you talk of human rights people at once defend their right to take away the rights of someone else for the good of society.

Examples now are the right to fire a gun  at someone in the head if the police think they might be a terrorist.  The rights of people in the social services to say sorry when they have a   child at risk and not go and visit her to see she is alright for months.  Many people get drunk and then do violent things and are surprised they are in trouble. There is also a great accepatance that you can do what you like and get away with it.

Human Rights have to be fought for. They belong to everyone. Today we have created laws that protect most groups. Yet that will not be enough. Often individuals have to stand up and show others that they will not accept the status quo.

Rosa Parks was an ordinary woman. Yet she is in history books for what she did on that bus all those years ago. So what rights will you stand up for? When you see injustice when will you say something?
